Finances
Wages for apprentices and training candidates vary from trade to trade. However, in all trades you receive lower wages at the beginning of your apprenticeship than you do towards the end. See also value creation.
The most usual distribution of wages during the apprenticeship/ in-service training period is:
- 1st half year: 30 %
- 2nd half year: 40 %
- 3rd half year: 50 %
- 4th half year: 80 %
If you want more specific information concerning wages in your trade, you must contact the relevant trade organization.
When you have entered into an apprenticeship contract/training contract, your wage terms are to emerge from the working agreement you have with the training establishment.
Grants and loans
If you are an apprentice, a training candidate or a practical training certificate candidate, you may apply to Lånekassen (the Norwegian State Educational Fund) for both grants and loans during your apprenticeship/ in-service training period. You may receive support for 11 months per school year.
You must satisfy some requirements to receive them. You can read more about this on lanekassen.no.
Housing grant
If you have to live away from your parents to carry out your apprenticeship/in-service training period, you may receive a housing grant. The size of the grant depends on how much you earn as an apprentice.
You must meet one of the following requirements to be entitled to a housing grant:
- The travel distance is more than 40 km.
- The total travel time is more than three hours round-trip.
- You are an apprentice working on an offshore platform or a ship.
- Other personal or social reasons make it impossible for you to live at home. Documentation is required.
Loan - living on your own
If you are over 18 years old and do not live with your parents, you may qualify for a loan. The loan you receive from Lånekassen must be repaid. You will have to repay the entire loan plus interest, but the repayment is made in monthly installments.
How to apply
You must wait with your application for grants and loans until you have entered into an approved apprenticeship/in-service training contract. When this has been done, you can apply for grants and loan on lanekassen.no.
You can log in with MinID or BankID like you did when applying for a school placement or an apprenticeship.
If you are under the age of 18, your parents must sign the application for financial support for you, and they may do this electronically. If they establish a digital mailbox before you apply, they will receive the answer in the digital mailbox and can sign for you straight away. Your parents can create a digital mailbox (Digipost or e-Boks) at www.velgdigitalpostkasse.no. The only thing they need is BankID.
Application deadlines
Applications from apprentices/training candidates must have been received by Lånekassen
- by June 30, or
- before the end of your apprenticeship, if it finishes before June 30.
