Practice candidates

Practice candidates are adults who have at least 25 % more experience in a recognized trade than the period of training prescribed for that trade.

This practical experience must be

  • comprehensive and documented
  • after an overall assessment deemed to cover the most essential elements in the curriculum for Vg3/ training in an enterprise in the recognized trade
  • be approved by the county authorities before you can sit the craft or journeyman’s examination

An assessment of total qualifications (formal, non-formal and informal competence) cannot be a substitute for this requirement of practical experience.

As a practice candidate, you are exempt from the requirement of having successfully completed common core subjects in order to sit the craft or journeyman–s examination. However you must pass a special examination for practice candidates before you can register for the craft or journeyman–s examination.

  • In most trades, this examination is to test how far you have achieved the competence aims determined in the curriculum for training in the recognized trade in a training establishment.
  • In some recognized trades in the educational programmes for electrical engineering and computer technology and technological and industrial production, this examination is to test how far you have achieved the competence aims determined in the programme subjects from Vg1, Vg2 and, if applicable, Vg3 in school that the recognized trade is based on and are relevant for the recognized trade.

The county authorities usually organize special courses preparing practice candidates for examinations. Where and how you are to register for the theoretical test for practice candidates (external candidate examination) varies from county to county. The deadline for registration is 15 September and 1 February. The routines for registering for the external candidate examination will be announced well in advance of the registration deadline. In some counties registration takes place online at privatist.inschool.visma.no. You must pay the county authorities the examination fee yourself in order to sit the examination.

You must also pay a fee before you can sit the craft or journeyman´s examination, and you are also personally responsible for finding an examination site and obtaining the necessary equipment for a practical test. To register for the craft or journeyman’s examination, you must contact the vocational training authorities in your county.

Please note that if you do not pass the craft or journeyman’s examination, you must wait six months before you can sit a new examination
